The prime medical plant of Southern Africa, Artemisia is a cleansing and antiseptic oil used to treat a wide variety of ailments. It has very strong antibiotic properties. Steam inhalation is widely used for chest colds, bronchitis, blocked nose and sinus headaches. Success is also claimed in the relief of “miner phthisis”. During the influenza epidemic of 1918, Artemisia was used extensively as a cure. It is used in a bath to relieve rash in measles and is good for pimples. Applied externally to the skin it relieves aching muscles and reduces inflammation. It is also used to treat skin infection and haemorrhoids. It is used to wash wounds, soothe sores and relieve bites and stings. A few drops placed in the socks reduces sweating of the feet and combats athlete’s foot. Artemisia is also used as an anti-malarial agent and to reduce fever. In Africa, it is widely used as a body wash to drive away evil spirits.
